VIVI WITH THE PIGGIES

Our little Vivien has the slowest growing hair. She asked me one day to put in some ponies and I did. I found them to be absolutely delightful and they feel like the most selfish thing I've ever done. I don't do them very often because I don't want putting them in to damage what little hair she has.

Vivi has the most expressive face and voice. She is saying the most hilarious and adorable things these days and she keeps us on our toes. She is incredibly sweet, but it is becoming more clear by the day that she is extremely strong willed and stubborn. I am happy that she feels comfortable enough in our family to be able to be a brat when she wants to, but I also don't want to encourage it. She is demanding and quite whiny when she doesn't get what she wants the instant she wants it. I don't know what to do about the whining. Stella would stop if I asked her to, but Vivi isn't so easily convinced. It is amazing how fast she can go from furious to delighted. She feels so strongly. I'm feel like I'm starting to meet the girl that survived the orphanage with such sweetness in her heart. She was determined to get through it all and she did.

Sometimes I find it exhausting to be her mom and I will lose my temper a bit. She has to constantly be on the move and always into everything. The other day she opened a bottle of bubble and spilled them everywhere and was playing in them. I had just mopped the floor and I was late. I got pretty annoyed as I cleaned up the mess. But then I remembered how she seems to know when "mommy mad at me" and I didn't want to leave on that note. So I called upstairs to her and told her that I loved her and I was sorry that I yelled about the bubble and that I wasn't mad anymore. She said: "Mommy, I sorry I spilled bubbled on floor." I was so surprised by her apology. I thought it was remarkable.

She is still taking nice long naps and she will sometimes tell me when she wants one. She will try new foods and if she doesn't like them she says "yucky" even if it is something she liked and ate the day before. She is a girl who just knows what she wants and is determined to get it and although it might make it tricky to be her mom sometimes, I know it is going to get her through anything.

She has such a magnetic presence that I hope serves her well and she always uses for the power of good. Everyone is charmed by her wherever we go. She is friendly and talkative and she loves people. She loves adventure and experiences. She is basically the greatest gift ever every single day.

About the time we took these pictures, Vivi started becoming aware of her missing tooth. She didn't understand where it went. She said the tooth fairy came and took it, and I told her that she lost it in China so now she will tell people about her tooth and that she put it under her pillow in China and the tooth fairy came and took it. One day she told us she wanted to find the tooth fairy so she could get her tooth and we told her the fairy is so small we would never find her. I wish I had a true story to tell her about her tooth. I wish I knew why she doesn't have it, just like I wish I knew so many things. But in the end I guess they don't matter. I just hope one day she forgives me for making up the story about the Chinese tooth fairy. :)

LAKE LIFE

Mark invited lots of people up to Jordanelle Resevoir for a birthday celebration. I make no secret about how I fell about lakes, but I was convinced we would have a good day as we drove up to the lake. Truly this day was so much out of the Sallay family agenda, but we still had a good time. And Vivi had the BEST time.

When we got there we went down to the water with all of Vivi's water toys and that is basically where she stayed the entire time. Brent shocked me by grabbing one of the kayaks and Stella. Then they headed out into the water. It was like seeing a mirage. After all of these years, the man is still full of surprises. I think Stella liked it, but she was probably too nervous to really enjoy it. I tired my best to enjoy the lake, but it truly makes my skin crawl to be around this kind of water. I think I have a little PTSD from my childhood days being by the lake with my grandparents and being stuck on a boat for long days without any food while everyone drank beer and fished. It sounds horrible, but at the time it was just my life, but it really brings me back to be around this kind of dark gross water. You would think I could keep this all to myself, but of course I told everyone that would listen... sometimes I wish I had a filter when I talk to others.

Mark and Kathy made the most amazing pork tacos that I still think about on a daily basis. I think I am going to have to make a case for the tacos to be made the next time they cook. SO good. How did I look in my hat? Vivi got it for me for Mother's Day. The wind blew it in the lake (wind...another reason I hate the lake) within seconds, but I just wore it anyway.

Overall it was an exciting way to spend a Saturday with the Sallay family, and the second we were in the car and heading home Vivi announced that she wanted to go to the beach. I'm taking her to the beach next week in Hawaii though...and that it more my scene.

SWIM SWIM SUGAR

July 12th was a swim day with the Douglas crew. It was a hard adjustment for Stella to not see Cali every week at dance so she was happy to see her friend again. Vivi had a great time too, although she is still a bit to small to roll with the big kids. After swimming we had lunch at Cafe Rio and took the Douglas' out for their first shaved ice of the summer.

COUSIN TIME

The Sallay cousins arrived the night we got home from Idaho on June 28th. They had been on the road for weeks and so we kept it pretty low key. Plus it isn't easy to get us all somewhere too wild. We did go to a little splash pad on June 29th. The water was cold and the kids there were crazy, so we didn't stay long. The kids had a good time though. Vivi was nervous the whole time, but I even think she had a bit of fun.

That night I got Valerie and I tickets to a free comedy show. It was SO fun. I get access to these tickets all the time and usually the shows are R rated, but this one was PG so it was perfect for us. Valerie had never been to a comedy show so that added some extra pizazz to the night. We were thankful to Brent for being willing to take on all of the kids while we went out. It was a lot to ask, but he did it, and the kids ended up living through it.

We made sure to get some shaved ice Saturday night and that was the last thing we took a picture of. I made dinner on Sunday and had my parents over for dinner so they could see Valerie and that was it. I always love a good visit with my girl and those kids. Nellie and Charlotte say the most hilarious things and the boys are adorable. Love these guys so much.
